Urgent gas and boiler help in Birmingham. Smell gas? Ring 0800 111 999 first. For a dead boiler, a leak or a house with no heat, here is what to do and how we help.
The emergency service makes the supply safe. Call them first, from outside, before anyone else.
Turn the stopcock off, then tell us where the water is coming from.
Lockouts, failed parts and no-power faults on combi and system boilers.
Babies, elderly and unwell callers are put to the front of the queue.
Breakdowns in rented homes and student lets, with the landlord kept informed.
The fault code and the pressure reading tell the engineer which parts to bring.
A smell of gas, a suspected leak or a carbon monoxide alarm sounding. Ring 0800 111 999 from outside the house for any of those.
Usually under the kitchen sink. In some older Birmingham houses it is in the hallway, the cellar or under the stairs.
For no heat or no hot water we aim for the same day or the next, anywhere in the city.
Tell your landlord first, as the repair is usually theirs to arrange. They are welcome to book us.
Reset it once. If the fault comes straight back, leave it switched off until it has been checked.
Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. The back lists exactly which appliances that engineer is qualified to work on, and the number can be checked on the Gas Safe Register.
When something goes wrong with the gas or the boiler, the order you do things in matters. A gas smell is not a job for a heating engineer first. It is a job for the National Gas Emergency Service, who answer 0800 111 999 at any hour, free, and will send someone out to make the supply safe. Get everyone out, leave the lights and switches alone, keep flames and cigarettes away, and ring from the street.
Most urgent calls in Birmingham are not that. They are the boiler that died overnight in a Handsworth terrace with a family to get washed and out, the tenant in a Selly Oak student house messaging the landlord at seven in the morning, the pensioner in Kings Norton whose house has been cold since yesterday, or water dripping through a kitchen ceiling from a pipe joint upstairs.
Those are what we come out for. If water is leaking, turn the stopcock off first, usually under the kitchen sink in a terrace and sometimes in the hallway of a 1930s semi. If the boiler has locked out, write down the code on the display. If the pressure gauge has dropped towards zero, say so. Each of those tells the engineer what to bring.
For no heat and no hot water we aim to be with you the same day or the next, anywhere in the city, and we put the most vulnerable first: babies, elderly people and anyone unwell in a cold house.
A photo of the boiler badge and the display on WhatsApp tells us the make, the model and often the likely part before anyone sets off. If you smell gas, leave the house, do not touch switches and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 from outside.
